Ooowwee: Street smart artist paves his path on the sidewalk

The Leader profiled the guy painting ten-hour days on Houston sidewalks -- the $50 first session, the tickets he outlasted, and the plan to leave a mark on the art world.

The Story

Roots

A long way from home

Born in Nigeria, he landed in Texas by way of a study-abroad detour through Indiana -- and brought the color with him. Two flags fly in his bio, and both of them make it onto the canvas.

The Street

The sidewalk is the studio

His first street session lasted four hours and made fifty dollars. Now it is Houston corners and Galveston art walks, eight to ten hours on one canvas, in front of whoever stops. He has caught tickets for selling on the sidewalk and kept showing up anyway -- grinning.

The Mind

Extra credit that took over

He took his first art class senior year of college for extra credit. The extra credit took over. He finished the computer science degree, then chose the brush -- an engineer's patience, a comedian's timing.

The People

The shirt off his back

One buyer got a painting for less than it was worth and, in the same breath, would have handed over the shirt he was wearing. That is the trade the street makes: paint for love, love for paint.

The Chain

The Patrick Star chain

Around his neck, always: a Patrick Star chain. Because the guy who lives under a rock dreams the biggest, and because taking yourself too seriously is the only real mistake. The wobbly gold star winking around this site is a cousin, not a copy.

Always laughing

Whenever I start on a canvas, I don't have an image in mind. I have zero clue what it will look like. All I know is that this canvas will be filled with art.

8-10 hours. One canvas. Live on the street.

Oil, acrylic, whatever the piece asks for -- painted in public, start to signature, no image in mind until it arrives.
