Catalogue note
A portrait cut into planes: the face and shoulders built as white tiles separated by heavy black leading, the headwrap in blues on the same grid, so the figure reads as mosaic or as stained glass. Behind her the ground is a vertical burn of cadmium red, orange and violet with a yellow ring set directly behind the head. Placing a disc of light behind a figure is the oldest device in devotional painting; used here on an unnamed sitter in a headwrap it confers status rather than reports it. The yellow eyes and the single red mouth are the only warm notes allowed onto the figure itself.
