Catalogue note
A flower piece that will not stay a flower piece: the vase and its blooms resolve into a face, two spiral eyes ringed in chrome yellow above an orange mouth with a keyboard of teeth, leaves fanning out where hair should be. Still life is among the oldest and most domesticated subjects in painting, and turning the bouquet into a portrait is the whole joke and the whole argument. Behind it, the ground splits putty over mauve and fills with his running inventory -- pitched roofs, a red tree, walking figures, birds, and a saucer lowering a small green beam over the block. Heavy black contour holds every passage; the oil is ridged thick enough over visible canvas weave that the flowers throw their own shadow.
