A sneaker at the bottom of a whole loud city. It says MY KICKS right on it. This one hung in the Vibrant Soles group show and it still wears the frame.
Catalogue note
One sneaker monumentalized at the base of a city that crowds every inch above it -- the pop object as portrait, in a lineage that runs from Warhol's shoe drawings into sneaker culture's own image-making. The city is stacked signage: faces in windows, stars, arches, panel over panel, held legible by a black scaffolding line and heavy impasto. Full-spectrum color against that black armature is the whole compositional bet, and it holds. The carved dark frame is part of the object -- it hung framed in a group show and kept the frame.
