A blue face with a silver crown and green eyes, on pink and orange. The flowers around the neck are painted thick. His name is down in the corner, backwards like he writes it.
Catalogue note
The quietest portrait here and the most frontal: a blue head under a small silver crown, the features reduced to two green leaf-shaped eyes and a green mouth, set against a soft vertical wash of apricot into rose. Non-local colour used as presence rather than description has a long line behind it, and the crown places the sitter squarely in the vocabulary Basquiat established. Against all that smoothness the marigold garland at the neck is laid on thick and wet -- the only heavily worked passage on the canvas. The signature sits at lower left with the letters reversed, a habit that repeats across the body of work.
