The big square, and the densest surface in the body of work: a hot-pink chair sunk into a tapestry of mandala suns, butterflies, birds, dotted fields and small standing figures, the paint piled until it casts shadow. The techniques change passage by passage -- pointillist confetti here, a swirled night sky in one corner, wet-into-wet ridges straight from the tube -- a full inventory of his marks on a single canvas. The faith that ornament can carry feeling is Klimt's; the density is his own, and the chair holds the center like a throne that stayed home.
