Blue hair, four eyes, one good year. Painted on a wood panel he found, old paint still on the frame. He paints over old surfaces all the time.
Catalogue note
A portrait with its eye-line displaced: the band carrying the eyes slides sideways off the face, a dislocation Picasso licensed and this panel makes its own. The head is zoned into flat planes of powder blue, cadmium yellow and black under one violet mass of hair, over a red-orange ground where the drips stay visible. Painted on found wood with older paint left showing at the edges -- he reworks used surfaces on purpose. The signature runs along the bottom with mirrored letters, a habit that repeats across the body of work.
