Catalogue note
One pigment pushed until it does the work of a palette: ultramarine dragged dry over a pale ground, line, tone and atmosphere all pulled from the same blue. The forms run allover and interlocked -- a wide-mouthed fish, faces, a dotted field, spirals -- with drawing and painting collapsed into a single act and the canvas tooth left visible in every stroke. Monochrome is the painter's oldest self-examination, from Picasso's blue rooms forward: withhold color and see whether the hand can hold the room.
