A big face drawn in one white line over a whole crowd of other faces. I AM FREE runs down the side. The 25 is down in the corner again.
Catalogue note
Two paintings on one surface: underneath, an allover field of small interlocking faces in saturated oil; over it, a single continuous white contour drawing one enormous head across the entire canvas. The white line does not describe the field beneath it, it overrules it -- a late mark that reorganises everything already there. I AM FREE and BE FREE run down the left margin in his letterforms, OOOWWEE at the top right, and the age-mark 25 sits in the corner that dates this run of work.
