Painted directly onto printed hymn sheets, with the staves, bar lines and lyrics of How Great Thou Art left legible beneath the paint. Working on found printed matter -- ledger paper, newsprint, maps -- has a long history, and the choice of a hymn is not incidental: the canvas is in conversation with its own ground. Over it he lays a continuous crowd of faces, figures and vessels in oil stick, drawn more than painted, with LOVE IS across the top and the box-and-noughts motif repeating at the right edge. Devotional text underneath, his own text on top.
